AI Translation Tools & Legal Document Confidentiality (UAE)

The Short Answer

Pasting a contract, court file, medical report or passport into a public AI chatbot or free translation website sends that content to a third party’s servers, often outside the UAE, under terms you did not negotiate. For legal documents that can breach an NDA, professional secrecy duties and UAE data protection law. AI can still have a place in a legal translation workflow, but only under controlled conditions, and an AI draft is never a certified translation.

At Smart World Legal Translation (SWLT), we use secure productivity tools where they help, but every certified translation is produced, checked, signed and stamped by a human translator under MOJ licence, and commercial files can be covered by an NDA. For why AI output alone is not accepted by UAE authorities, see human vs AI legal translation.

What UAE Data Protection Law Says

Legal documents are full of personal data: names, passport and Emirates ID numbers, addresses, salaries, health details and family relationships. Three regimes can apply:

  • Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on the Protection of Personal Data (PDPL) for onshore UAE. It requires a lawful basis for processing, appropriate security measures and controls on transferring personal data outside the UAE.
  • DIFC Data Protection Law No. 5 of 2020 for entities in the Dubai International Financial Centre.
  • ADGM Data Protection Regulations 2021 for entities in Abu Dhabi Global Market.

Sector rules add more. Health data, banking records and government files often carry their own confidentiality or localisation requirements. If you are a law firm, bank or clinic, your client’s data is not yours to upload to a consumer tool. This article is general information, not legal advice on your obligations.

Where the Real Risks Are

1. Data leaving your control

Free tools may keep what you paste, log it or use it to improve their models, depending on their terms and your settings. Once uploaded, you cannot recall it.

2. Cross-border transfer

Servers are often outside the UAE. Under the PDPL, transfers of personal data abroad are restricted, and DIFC and ADGM have their own transfer rules.

3. Breach of NDA or privilege

M&A documents, settlement drafts and litigation strategy are usually covered by confidentiality clauses. Uploading them to a third-party service can breach those clauses.

4. Silent errors

Even when the data is safe, raw AI output can drop a negation, merge clauses or invent text. See legal terms machine translation gets wrong.

Seven Questions to Ask Any Translation Provider

Before you send sensitive files, ask these questions and expect clear answers in writing:

  • Do you use AI or machine translation on my files? If so, which kind of tool, and is it a public consumer service?
  • Is my content used to train any model? The answer should be no.
  • Where are my files stored, and for how long? Ask about deletion after delivery.
  • Who sees my documents? Freelancers abroad, or a defined in-house team?
  • Will you sign an NDA? For commercial and litigation files this should be routine.
  • Who certifies the translation? It must be a translator licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice for official use.
  • Does a human check every line against the source? Spot-checks are not enough for legal text.

Practical Rules for In-House Teams

Keep consumer tools for non-confidential text

Getting the gist of a public news article is fine. Contracts, IDs, medical and court files are not.

Redact before any internal triage

If staff must read a foreign document quickly, remove names, ID numbers and amounts first.

Send official documents straight to a certified translator

Anything for a court, notary, ministry, bank or embassy needs a certified translation anyway, so an AI draft adds risk without saving a step.

Keep one approved glossary

Consistent terms across contracts reduce disputes. See our guide to contract translation in the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it illegal to put a contract into ChatGPT or Google Translate in the UAE?

Not in itself, but if the contract contains personal data or confidential information you may breach the PDPL, DIFC or ADGM rules, an NDA or professional secrecy duties. Check your obligations before uploading.

Can an AI-translated document be certified afterwards?

Only after a licensed translator has checked and corrected it against the original in full. Because the translator takes responsibility for every word, the work is effectively redone to their standard.

Does SWLT use AI?

We use secure productivity tools where they help with consistency on long files, but every certified translation is produced, checked and stamped by a licensed human translator. Client documents are not used to train AI models.

Will you sign an NDA?

Yes, for commercial, corporate and litigation files on request.

How much does a certified translation cost?

From AED 80 per 200-word page for Arabic and English, AED 100 for French, AED 150 for German, Italian or Turkish, and AED 250 for other languages such as Chinese, Russian or Urdu (all excl. 5% VAT). Urgent work is priced on request, and large files receive discounts.
