ESG & Sustainability Report Translation in the UAE (2026)
The Short Answer
Two rules drive ESG translation work in the UAE. Federal Decree-Law No. 11 of 2024 on the Reduction of Climate Change Effects came into force on 30 May 2025, with a one-year transition to 30 May 2026: covered public and private entities must measure and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and keep records, and violations can be fined from AED 50,000 to AED 2,000,000. Separately, SCA Decision 3/RM/2020 requires public joint-stock companies listed on ADX and DFM to publish an annual sustainability report. A public ESG report needs expert financial and environmental translation; certificates, permits and green-finance contracts submitted to authorities, banks or courts often need MOJ-certified translation.
Smart World Legal Translation (SWLT) translates ESG, annual and sustainability reports between Arabic and English and from 50+ other languages, from AED 80 per 200-word page (excl. 5% VAT), with discounts for large reports.
Why ESG Translation Is a 2026 Priority
Three trends meet in the 2026 reporting cycle:
- Climate Law compliance. With the transition period over, companies are building emissions inventories, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) records and reduction plans, often with consultants and parent-company data in other languages.
- Listed-company reporting. ADX and DFM issuers publish sustainability reports, many aligned with GRI, TCFD and the ISSB standards (IFRS S1 and S2) as recommended in exchange ESG guidance, and investors compare the Arabic and English versions.
- Green and sustainability-linked finance. Lenders ask for translated environmental audits, ISO 14001 certificates and governance policies, supporting the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative.
Which ESG Documents Need Which Translation
| Document | Main audience | Direction | Recommended level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual ESG or integrated report | Investors, SCA, ADX/DFM, the public | English ↔ Arabic (plus Chinese or Russian for investor relations) | Specialist financial and environmental translation with native editing |
| GHG verification and audit statements | Environment authorities, green-finance banks | Foreign language or English → Arabic | MOJ-certified when filed formally with an authority |
| Environmental permits, EIA summaries, ISO 14001/50001 | Environment authorities, tender committees | Source language → Arabic and English | Certified or technical, depending on the authority’s checklist |
| Board ESG charter, whistleblowing and anti-bribery policies | Regulators, employees, auditors | English ↔ Arabic (plus workforce languages) | Bilingual legal and compliance translation |
| Green loan covenants and sustainability-linked contracts | Banks, legal counsel, courts | English ↔ Arabic | MOJ-certified legal translation |
Arabic Terminology Traps in ESG Reports
Auditors and regulators who compare the two versions quickly spot inconsistent terms. Four areas need strict glossary control:
- Emission scopes and units. Scope 1 (انبعاثات النطاق 1), Scope 2 and Scope 3, and tCO2e must be identical in every chapter and table.
- Materiality. Financial materiality (الأهمية النسبية المالية) vs impact materiality (الأهمية النسبية للأثر), and physical vs transition climate risk, follow IFRS terminology.
- Social and governance metrics. Emiratisation (التوطين), ICV, lost-time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) and board independence have settled meanings in the UAE.
- Forward-looking statements. Net-zero targets must keep their conditional wording (“aims to”, “targets”) so a goal does not read as a guarantee. See why human review matters.
Five Steps to Publish Both Languages on Time
1. Build the glossary early
Share last year’s report, your GRI or IFRS index and approved Arabic terms four to six weeks before publication.
2. Translate in batches
Send governance, strategy and case-study chapters first while emissions tables are still under audit.
3. Separate certified filings
Identify early which certificates, verification statements or board declarations need MOJ-certified translation and MOFA attestation.
4. Proofread the designed layout
After design, we check every chart label, decimal, unit (MWh, GJ, tCO2e) and footnote in the Arabic RTL and English versions.
5. Control late changes
One project manager handles last-minute board or auditor edits so both versions publish together. For audited statements see financial statements translation; for tax filings see FTA tax document translation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a public ESG report need MOJ-certified translation?
Usually not on every page. A report published for investors needs expert financial and technical translation. Certified translation is needed for certificates, verification statements, POAs or contracts submitted to ministries, courts or banks.
How long does an 80- to 100-page report take?
With a glossary and a coordinated team, typically 5 to 10 working days including review. An executive summary can often be delivered within 24 hours.
How much does ESG report translation cost?
From AED 80 per 200-word page for Arabic and English, AED 100 for French, AED 150 for German, Italian or Turkish, and AED 250 for other languages such as Chinese, Russian or Urdu (all excl. 5% VAT). Urgent work is priced on request, and large files receive discounts. Full reports are quoted by word count, tables, languages and timeline.
Can you check our designed Arabic PDF?
Yes. We review the final RTL layout so that numbers, units, chart legends and headings display correctly, without reversed digits or broken text.
