Translating WhatsApp Messages and Emails as Evidence for UAE Courts: 2026 Guide

Can WhatsApp Messages Be Used as Evidence in the UAE?

Yes. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 35 of 2022 on Evidence in Civil and Commercial Transactions, electronic evidence such as emails and instant messages can be relied on in UAE courts, and the court assesses how much weight to give it. UAE courts have accepted WhatsApp exchanges to prove debts and agreements in recent years.

But Arabic is the language of the UAE courts. A chat in English, Russian, Hindi or any other language has to be translated into Arabic by a legal translator licensed by the Ministry of Justice before it can be filed as an exhibit. A careless translation is one of the easiest things for the other side to attack.

How to Prepare Electronic Evidence Before Translation

1. Keep the original data

Do not delete the chat or change phone. Keep the device and, where possible, an export of the conversation. If authenticity is disputed, the court may want to see the original or appoint a technical expert.

2. Export the full conversation, not a few screenshots

Use WhatsApp's export function or save emails with their full headers. Screenshots alone can be challenged as incomplete. If you must use screenshots, keep them in order and make sure each shows the date and time.

3. Show who sent each message

Each message must clearly show the sender, the phone number or email address, and the date and time. The translation should keep these details next to every message.

4. Ask your lawyer which messages matter

Courts dislike selective extracts. Agree with your lawyer which full threads to file, then translate each one completely.

What a Court-Ready Evidence Translation Includes

A translation that holds up in court is more than the text of the messages. It should include:

  • Every message in the thread you file, in the original order, with no gaps.
  • Sender details, dates and times for each message, exactly as shown in the original.
  • Attachments, captions and forwarded content, plus a note where an image or file has no text.
  • Mixed-language and informal writing: slang, abbreviations and Arabic written in Latin letters (Arabizi) rendered with their meaning, with a translator's note where something is ambiguous.
  • The translator's stamp, signature and licence number on every page, with the original attached to the translation in one file.

Why Translated Evidence Gets Challenged

Partial translation

Translating only the messages that help you invites the argument that the context was left out.

Missing dates and times

Without timestamps the court cannot place the messages in the timeline of the dispute.

Unstamped translation

A translation without an MOJ-licensed translator's stamp is normally not accepted. See MOJ-certified translators.

Inconsistent names and figures

Names, amounts and account numbers that differ from the original or from other exhibits give the other party an easy objection.

Meaning lost in informal language

A literal translation of slang or a sarcastic reply can change its meaning. Legal translators flag ambiguity rather than guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to translate messages that are already in Arabic?

No translation is needed for Arabic text, but mixed chats often contain English or Arabizi, and those parts do need translating.

Can you translate screenshots?

Yes, as long as they are clear and show the dates. We translate them in order and attach the originals to the translation.

Does a stamped translation prove the messages are genuine?

No. The translation confirms what the messages say in Arabic. Whether they are authentic and how much weight they carry is decided by the court.

How is a chat translation priced?

By volume, from AED 60 per 200-word page. Long chats are quoted after we see the export. Urgent same-day work carries a 20% surcharge.

Is my chat kept confidential?

Yes. Litigation files are handled under confidentiality and are never pasted into public AI tools.
