What MOJ Attestation Covers
The UAE Ministry of Justice sits at the judicial layer of the document chain. Where MOFA attestation validates documents for cross-border use, the MOJ layer validates the legal instruments themselves: notarized documents, court-issued papers, judicial records โ and, crucially for most families and businesses, the sworn translations that accompany them.
Three things carry MOJ authority in practice:
- The sworn translator's stamp. Translators personally sworn in by the MOJ carry a registered personal seal. For courts and most government bodies, that stamp is the certification โ no further "attestation of the translation" is needed for domestic use.
- Notarization. UAE Public Notaries (part of the judicial system) witness signatures on powers of attorney, declarations, and contracts. Many "MOJ attestation" requests are actually notarization requests.
- Court document certification. Judgments, case files, and true copies issued or certified through the courts and MOJ e-services.
MOJ vs MOFA โ Don't Confuse the Two
| MOJ (Ministry of Justice) | MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) | |
|---|---|---|
| Layer | Judicial โ inside the UAE legal system | Federal/international โ across borders |
| Covers | Sworn translations, notarized instruments, court documents | Any document needing recognition abroad or arriving from abroad |
| Typical trigger | Court case, POA, legal proceedings in the UAE | Visa files, degrees from abroad, UAE documents going overseas |
| Sequence | Comes before MOFA when both are needed | Final UAE stamp; foreign embassy comes before (incoming) or after (outgoing) |
A typical outbound file (UAE POA to be used abroad) runs: sworn translation โ notary โ MOJ โ MOFA โ destination embassy. A typical inbound file (foreign degree for UAE employment) runs: origin-country attestation โ UAE embassy there โ MOFA here โ sworn translation into Arabic.
When Your File Needs the MOJ Layer
- Court proceedings in Abu Dhabi or any emirate: every foreign-language exhibit must carry an MOJ-sworn translation. Courts reject uncertified translations outright.
- Powers of attorney: drafted bilingual, signed before the notary; if used abroad, continue to MOFA and the destination embassy. See our bilingual POA service.
- Marriage, divorce & inheritance files: judicial documents plus sworn translations of any foreign certificates.
- Corporate legal instruments: board resolutions, articles of association and similar documents destined for courts, notaries, or use abroad.
The Step-by-Step Process (Abu Dhabi)
- Identify the real requirement. Ask the receiving authority exactly what they need: a sworn translation? a notarized instrument? a court-certified copy? Each is a different path โ and this one question prevents most wasted fees.
- Prepare the document. Originals or certified true copies; unlaminated; complete (including stamps and reverse sides โ authorities check).
- Obtain the sworn translation from an MOJ-registered translator if the document is not in Arabic (for court/government use) or not in the destination language (for outbound files). The translator's registered stamp and signature go on every page set.
- Notarize where required. POAs and declarations are signed before the Public Notary โ in Abu Dhabi this is available through ADJD (Abu Dhabi Judicial Department) branches and online notary services.
- Complete MOJ e-service attestation where the receiving party requires it (court-certified copies, judicial documents), via the MOJ portal or service centers.
- Continue the chain if the document crosses borders: MOFA attestation, then the destination country's embassy โ see the embassy legalization guide.
The Sworn Translation Requirement
This is the step our office lives inside, so let us be precise about what "MOJ-certified translation" means. A translator becomes MOJ-sworn by holding the required academic qualification, passing the Ministry's examination, and taking a formal oath. The Ministry issues a personal registration number and seal. When that seal appears on a translation:
- UAE courts accept the translation as evidence without further certification;
- Notaries accept it as the Arabic face of a bilingual instrument;
- MoFAIC accepts it as the translation layer in attestation files.
A translation from an unregistered translator โ however accurate โ has no standing in this chain. This is the most common failure point we repair: files translated abroad or by unlicensed offices that must be redone from scratch. Every translator who signs at SWLT is MOJ-sworn; see our MOJ translators page or the MOJ attestation requirements service page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MOJ attestation process in Abu Dhabi?
Prepare the document โ sworn translation into Arabic (if foreign-language) โ notarization or court certification as required โ MOJ e-service attestation where applicable โ MOFA if the file crosses borders.
Is MOJ attestation required for a translation used in UAE courts?
The MOJ-sworn translator's stamp is itself the required certification for court use. What matters is that the translator is on the MOJ register.
What is the difference between MOJ attestation and notarization?
Notarization is a notary witnessing a signature on an instrument (a POA, a declaration). MOJ attestation certifies judicial documents and copies. Many files need notarization first, then attestation layers above it.
