Why UAE Visa Document Translations Get Rejected (and How to Get Them Right First Time)
The Short Answer
A UAE residence visa file that includes foreign documents (marriage and birth certificates for family sponsorship, degrees for employment or Golden Visa, police clearance certificates) usually needs those documents attested abroad, attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and translated into Arabic by a translator licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice (MOJ). When a file is sent back by ICP, GDRFA Dubai or a typing centre because of the translation, it is almost always for one of six reasons, and all of them are avoidable.
Smart World Legal Translation (SWLT) is an MOJ-licensed translation office in Abu Dhabi that translates visa documents from 50+ languages from AED 60 per 200-word page, online from anywhere in the UAE. Below are the six mistakes, and what the best certified translation service for a UAE visa should do to avoid them.
The Six Reasons Visa Translations Get Rejected
1. The document was translated before it was attested
The translation must cover the attestation stamps, including the UAE embassy stamp and the MOFA sticker. A translation made before the last stamp leaves part of the document untranslated, and usually has to be redone. Our MOFA attestation guide explains the order.
2. Stamps, seals and the back of the page were left out
A certified translation covers everything on the document: stamps, handwritten notes, marginal entries and text on the reverse. Missing a registrar's note on a marriage certificate is enough to raise a question.
3. Names do not match the passport
Arabic names can be written in Latin script in several ways, and foreign names can be written in Arabic in several ways. The translation should follow the passport spelling exactly, so the name matches your Emirates ID and the visa application. This is the most common problem we fix.
4. The translator is not MOJ-licensed
Government bodies accept translations stamped by a translator licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice. A translation from abroad, or from an unlicensed provider, is normally not accepted for a UAE visa file, even if it is accurate.
5. The underlying document has expired
Police clearance certificates are usually accepted only if recently issued, often within three to six months, depending on the authority. Translating an old certificate wastes the fee. See our police clearance guide.
6. Pages or annexes are missing
Multi-page transcripts, family books and court decrees must be translated in full. A translation of the first page only does not certify the document.
Which Documents Each Visa Usually Needs
| Visa type | Documents often translated | Related guide |
|---|---|---|
| Family / spouse sponsorship | Marriage certificate, children's birth certificates | UAE family visa guide |
| Employment visa | Degree certificate, experience letters, police clearance where requested | Degree recognition guide |
| Golden Visa | Degrees, transcripts, salary certificates, bank statements, company documents | Golden Visa translation |
| Investor / partner visa | Trade licence, memorandum of association, bank statements | Company documents translation |
| Status changes | Divorce or death certificates, custody decrees | Divorce certificate attestation |
Requirements vary by emirate and by case, so always check the current list with ICP or GDRFA Dubai before you submit.
How to Choose the Best Certified Translation for a UAE Visa
The "best" visa translation is the one that is accepted the first time (our guide to choosing a legal translation company has a longer checklist). Before you pay, check that the provider:
- Stamps every translation under an MOJ licence and can name the licensed translator.
- Asks for your passport copy so names and dates of birth match exactly.
- Translates after attestation and includes every stamp, sticker and reverse page.
- Gives a fixed quote up front: SWLT starts from AED 60 per 200-word page, with a 20% surcharge for same-day work.
- Delivers a certified PDF for online applications, with the stamped hard copy when an authority wants paper.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my marriage certificate attested before it is translated?
Yes, in most cases. Attest it in the issuing country and at the UAE MOFA first, then translate the attested document, so the translation covers the stamps as well.
Is a translation done in my home country accepted for a UAE visa?
Usually not. UAE authorities expect a translation by a UAE MOJ-licensed translator. Translations made abroad are normally redone in the UAE.
Can I get my visa documents translated online?
Yes. Send clear scans or photos on WhatsApp, receive a quote, and get a certified PDF by email. A stamped hard copy can be couriered anywhere in the UAE.
How long does a visa document translation take?
Most certificates are ready the same or next working day. Same-day delivery is available for a 20% surcharge.
How much does it cost to translate a marriage or birth certificate?
From AED 60 per 200-word page. Most single-page certificates fall within the starting price.
